Ceylon Cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka, an island off the southeast coast of India which was formerly known as Ceylon. Ceylon cinnamon is considered a premium cinnamon, both for flavor and health purposes, and is commonly referred to as 'true cinnamon.' Ceylon cinnamon is much less common than Cassia cinnamon, which is readily available in stores. Unless cinnamon is specifically labeled Ceylon cinnamon, it is safe to assume it is Cassia cinnamon.
Ceylon has a sweeter and more complex flavor than cassia cinnamon, but also important health advantages. Ceylon cinnamon contains much lower levels of coumarin, which is a natural chemical that can be toxic to the kidneys and liver, and it is not recommended to be taken in high doses. We only sell Ceylon cinnamon which is regarded as the much safer alternative.
Cinnamon has been used for thousands of years as a spice as well as for its medicinal properties. Ceylon Cinnamon has been proven to help diabetic patients improve blood sugar and triglyceride levels, and also may help lower cholesterol. It also contains proanthocyanadins, which are antioxidants, and promotes digestive health and helps reduce blood pressure. Cinnamon is also used as a remedy for nausea, diarrhea, and indigestion.
There are no known side effects of Ceylon cinnamon consumption, although like most spices or medicinal supplements, it is recommended to be used in moderation, and consuming higher serving sizes is not considered to be more beneficial.
